HijamahWorks Policy on Spiritual Illness, 'Ayn (Evil Eye), Black Magic (Sihr) and/or Jinn Posession

There is a sentiment that Hijamah can be a cure or treatment for cases of individuals suffering black magic (sihr) or possession. HijamahWorks at this time does not treat such cases. However due to a variety of mixed information, we found it necessary to clarify some important concepts. As a Muslim one should be aware of this, in order to help clarify for others whom believe they have have been afflicted with such illnesses.

Remember when someone is envious of you, it is usually for: health, weatlh, or marriage. So a person may have difficulty with getting married, finding or keeping a job, continual sickness, decline in business, or family discord.

There are 3 Levels/Types to Spiritual Illnesses:

1. Evil Eye ('Ayn)
2. Black Magic (Sihr)
3. Demonic Possession (Jinn)

Evil Eye
Evil Eye is from Hasad (envy) in the heart, thoughts or feelings from one person to another. Typically a person suffering from 'ayn does not know. You may have a bad feeling around certain individuals who may have negativity towards you. In some cultures people are quick to 'blame' any misfortune on 'ayn. Yes it can lead to 'bad luck' but not all misfortunes or setbacks are from 'ayn. Sometimes setbacks are from a consequence of our own actions, due to our sins, they can be an expiation from Allah, or a means for us to come closer or be distanced from Allah. Unfortunately there is no exact way to confirm if a person has 'ayn.

Black Magic
In this case, an envier has deliberately gone to a sorcerer and created a specific spell against the sufferer. These often involve casting the spell upon personal items, such as hair, nails or blood. This is one of the reasons all waste bags are sent home with you after a treatment. Black Magic is far more obvious in its negative effects. When we see a person afflicated with job loss, business failure (lawsuit, bankruptcy), inability to have children, familial conflicts, and health issues - multiple occurring at the same time and on-setting with a short time frame, then we are fairly confident this is from Sihr. In this case Jinn will agitate the person but not possess. A person can confirm this when they have dreams they are being attacked by jinn or black animals. This is the most common sign.

Jinn Possession
This is the most unfortunate and worst of spiritual illnesses. Sometimes it is due to sihr and other times due to personal negligence such as severe sinfulness/arrogance. In this case Jinn actually enter the body and cause issues internally. Many of the above mentioned signs but the main difference is extra-sensory experiences such as hearing voices that are not yours, or things like doors/windows/lights opening or closing unassisted.

Q: What is the best resource you can suggest?

We suggest following brother Muhammad Tim Humble http://muhammadtim.com/ as we feel he guides people to cures relying only on the Quran and Sunnah.

May Allah keep you safe at all times, ameen

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He who recites three times every morning and evening: 'Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'as-mihi shai'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i, wa Huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim (In the Name of Allah with Whose Name there is protection against every kind of harm in the earth or in the heaven, and He is the All-Hearing and All- Knowing),' nothing will harm him." [Abu Dawud and At- Tirmidhi].

Q: Why HijamahWorks does not treat cases of spiritual illness

Quite frankly we do not have the training. We are not raqi's or counsellors. HijamahWorks focuses on medical issues.

Q: What is the treatment according to the Quran and Sunnah?

Please refer to the site http://muhammadtim.com/ for guidance according to the Quran and Sunnah.

Q: Someone locally does something called "Jinn Catching", what is your take on this?

When we looked into this option we found the brothers to be sincere. They do not claim this treatment to be from the Quran and Sunnah, so it cannot be labelled an innovation. They are clear it is a newly invented method, created by a man. Upon our analysis it seems to rely on "Power of Suggestion" and hypnosis techniques such as visualizations. Any negative statements we heard were not in the form of fatwa so we chose not to relay that information here. But there are without doubt many questions about the origins and underlying implication of the method.

So as of this time we do not have a position for or against it. Rather our best advice is for individuals to seek cures from the Quran and Sunnah.

Q: What is the relationship between spiritual illnesses and mental illnesses?

From our consulting with experts in the field, there is an intermixing of the two. Many people suffer mental illnesses and blame it on sihr. Not all mental illnesses are from sihr, and can be treated with pharmaceuticals. However, not all sihr is from mental illnesses. There are many cases of normally healthy individuals who get afflicated.

Q: How do I protect myself and my family?

This is the most important question of all and much has been written about it.

At a high level here are some points from the Quran and Sunnah:
  • Keep your body clean: do istinja and gusl regularly
  • Pray your 5x daily prayers on time
  • Constantly read Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, and the last 3 "Quls" in the morning, after each salah, and before sleep
  • Remove things and habits which prevent angels from coming into your home such as smoking, and anything filty (khabeeth).
  • Seek knowledge, study Allah (swt), keep a close relationship with the Quran
  • Get a copy of The Fortress of the Muslim (Hisnul Muslim)
  • Be fair and just in your dealings, do not be arrogant, and do not oppress others.
  • Be wise and empathetic in what good news you share with others.
